SAF Conscription
“The less they have to worry about right now, the better. He’s in good hands. That’s all that matters.” She looked up from her report, smiling sadly. “He’s sixteen. On Sparnell, he’d be considered old enough to decide for himself.” “Were we really old enough, though?” “No,” Javon laughed, the motion sending ripples through her orange fur. “That’s why it worked so well.”
Observance
“Let me just get your paperwork squared away, and we can get you into the seminar before you miss too much more of it,” Soren offered, holding out his hand. Jake faltered, before passing over the papers he’d taken from the office. “This is all I have left. Gorlik took the rest.” Soren scowled, reading the notes. “This isn’t anything useful at all, I’m afraid.” He shook his head, grabbing a tablet from his desk. “No matter. We’ll just have to fill out what we can from scratch, and get the rest from your planetary government. Birthday?” Jake bit his lip. He didn’t know anything about Sparnell’s calendar. <Tell him you turned 16 yesterday,> Feels suggested. “Prompt. Always good to see in a conscript,” Soren smiled when Jake relayed the information.

Kane Razick sounds like an absolutely kick-ass character. I really enjoyed this coming of age article, and I'd love to find out what kind of inferior or shameful roles they could get assigned to.
I adore Razick. She figures prominently in "In Spite of the Inevitable". As does her brother Jeb, who was deemed unfit for the fleet and sent to become a Biologist / Hydroponics expert.
