soulbound

There are two kinds of soulbindings. With firm, the soul is bound until the object is destroyed, or a Necromancer counters the spell.   If I undo that, and cast a soft soulbind instead, the binding would end as soon as you decided you wanted to be free. But then the spell would be over.
The Soulbound are those deceased souls bound to an object within the mortal plane. The duration of the binding, the soul's abilities while bound, and their choice in whether or not to remain in this condition all depend upon the type of binding spell cast.

Firm Soulbind

A firm soulbind permanently traps an individual's soul within an object, effectively imprisoning them. Souls bound in this way cannot visit the Afterlife, nor can they be reached via Soul Call unless the caster is currently in possession of the item into which they are bound. Their prison becomes their new body, allowing them to use any technologies or abilities built into the device.   Only a Necromancer experienced in Soulbind can break this spell, although others can free the soul through the complete destruction of the object into which they are bound.

Soft Soulbind

By contrast, a soft soulbind allows the bound individual to retain their personal choice in whether or not they wish to remain in the object. Rather than imprisonment this type of spell allows a soul to temporarily visit the mortal plane until they are ready to leave again.   This spell can also be undone through the destruction of the object on which the Soulbind spell was cast. Otherwise the choice of the duration of the spell remains with the bound individual.

Modified Soulbind

I think I can combine the two. The eternal duration of the firm bindings while still letting you choose whether or not they apply.
— Shane Lawrence
A special process developed for use by the Mordena, a modified soulbind allows the target's Soul to choose to leave the binding at any time, while still retaining the effectiveness of the binding spell. This allows the Mordena to provide multiple binding points for their Afterlife Intelligences, and forms one of the cornerstones in the effectiveness of MORTAC and its many communication points and backup servers.

Resurrection

A special classification of Soulbinding, Resurrection occurs when an individual is bound into a Reconstruction Clone or other living body bearing enough of their mortal genetic material to count as their own body. This is one of the options available to the deceased when working with an Afterlife Planner, although due to costs and time constraints in the construction of the clone this procedure is rarely chosen unless offered through employment perks. Some skills are invaluable, after all, and it often remains cheaper to retain an existing expert than to train a new one.

Oh I love how the companies are using these soulbounds XD All to save having to retrain someone :p Though it does seem better to use the firm souldbound to enslave someone than to allow someone more freedom with the resurrection, then you don't have to ay them :p   Does this mean that it's near impossible to get rid of rid people and politiciens unless their souls are destroyed? That must be very annoying for the rest of the population... Do those rich people even age or can they just bind their soul to a newer improved body?

There are some who just keep resetting themselves, yes!   Regarding the use of firm bindings for your AI, there is something to keep in mind - you can force them to stay put but that won't make them do what you want. So you still need to entice them somehow. The Sparnell Confederation's early experimentations with Afterlife Intelligence involved the use of political prisoners in military ships, and they learned quickly that this was a great way to lose expensive ships due to grumpy AI trying to cause their captors as much misery as possible.

Oooo, I love this! The differences between choice and no choice with the different bonds is fascinating. If someone is stuck in a firm bond, and have some movement capabilities in the object they're bound to, can they end their bond on their own terms by destroying their object?

They certainly could! They'd want to be careful they destroyed more than just their method of movements when they did it, though.

Necromancy is a wholesome magic! I stand by this!   And I mean, if you don't want to die, pick the right training and your job will fund your Resurrections for you.

Right off the bat, lemme say I love the opening quote. It a great example of exposition and is what appears in the actual novels, I assume. It tells is exactly what we need to know about the two methods of binding in a fraction of the time and space. Lovely.   I love the idea itself and I have a few questions about it. Is there like a limit in radius for the soul? Like are they the object or are they just tethered to it? Can they appear as a soul but have a limited radius of movement? I hope that makes sense.   Another question is what is meant by complete destruction of the object. If they're bound to say, a box, does breaking it work or must be thoroughly vaporized and or turned to ash to work? Idk just things I thought about while reading.   Love the quote about reading fine print too. It made me chuckle but the more I thought about it the more I realize that its kinda scary
