Incorruptible

Stars, Zeke wished he could feel normal for once. Fade into the background like a nobody, without all the flashy attention that came with being an Incorruptible Asset.
The Interrogators
Individuals Immune to Magic within the Space Defense Legion are often known as Incorruptible.

History

The title originates to the aftermath of the War for Enlightenment, as the SDL's predecessor, the Human Defense League, shifted priorities to care for the surviving members of the magic-immune Order of Librarians and nurse them back to health.   Due to the HDL's strong anti-magic sentiments at the time, complete immunity to magic's effects were seen as a blessing, rather than the modern-day disability it has become thanks to society's reliance on magic for everything from minor conveniences to interstellar travel, even among the Legion's populace. Thus these Immune survivors were often called an assortment of reverent names to acknowledge their status, and the archaic term Incorruptible stuck.

Cultural Significance

Today, the vast majority of Incorruptible can be found on the Legion homeworld of Ruverth. Some historians believe this the result of a concentrated effort by a long-forgotten government program to consolidate those with certain genetic markers on the homeworld in the hope of increasing the Immune population. No official records have been located to support this theory, although multitudes of documentation prove its long history as a commonly-held conspiracy theory.

The Asset Program

The present-day Ministry of Incorruption has prioritized the health and welfare of those identified as Incorruptible, enticing many to join The Asset Program. TAP, also known as "The Program" by those enrolled, matches participants with desirable roles within the government and civilian sectors and provides for their greater needs within society. This government assistance extends to their siblings and caretakers, should the Incorruptible be enrolled during childhood.

Public Opinion

Opinions on the Incorruptible today range from pity to envy, often depending upon one's exposure to and experience with those Immune.   The Incorruptible are unable to travel between space systems due to the Legion's current reliance on portal drives for interstellar transit. Smaller magical devices are also prone to malfunction when interacted with regularly by the Incorruptible, even when designed for use without any magical capabilities.   On the other hand, TAP's eagerness to enroll all Immune is seen as favoritism by many, particularly when accompanied by the government's guarantees to meet all participants' needs. In these circles, the Incorruptible are seen as freeloaders and privileged, despite their difficulties with many aspects of modern society.

*squints suspiciously at the government*   I don't think I would want to be Incorruptible, even with all the privileges it grants.

Me neither.   But, y'know. And some parents love it! Knowing their kid is set for life and won't want for anything.   Anything tangible, anyway.
