Maintenance

Crisis averted, Alanis turned her attention to preventing a repeat performance. <<Telemetry! Don't forget your primary responsibilities. Communications! Get the Relentless and Reckoning on the link. I want to know what the hell that was. Maintenance, damage report.>>
Maintenance is the callsign for the individual currently heading the Maintenance Department of the spacecraft, assigning tasks and priorities to those under their command. On military craft this is one of the few departments most often led by an enlisted crew member rather than a commissioned officer, similar to Hydroponics. While Maintenance may be led by an Afterlife Intelligence the department will always require living crew members due to the nature of their work.   The responsibilities of Maintenance depend upon the technologies within the spacecraft, but encompass anything ship-related and not assigned elsewhere. These range from smaller everyday jobs such as janitorial, preventative maintenance, and simple repairs, all the way to critical items battle damage both during and after conflicts. This also includes maintaining gravity within the ship, unless that task has been assigned to Maneuvering. Life Support also typically falls under Maintenance, with support from Hydroponics on ships using that role.   Other departments also rely upon Maintenance to support their own efforts, especially when it comes to maintaining their equipment and tools. For this reason, experienced officers will often advise newcomers within their departments to treat the maintenance crews with the same respect they grant their own team. With the large quantity of tasks and requests Maintenance reviews and reprioritizes on an hourly basis, it's prudent to remain on good terms.

All they have is time.

Killing her would solve most of his problems.

But it wouldn’t solve any of the problems that mattered. That was the trouble with immortality, after all. With an eternity before him, everything else became inconsequential.

Everything but her.

Kydell growled in displeasure. Why must I do everything myself around here? "Communications, get me Maintenance."   <Maintenance. Go.>   "There are intruders on my ship. I want you to track them and tell me where they are at all times."   <I'm afraid I can't do that, Sir. The internal sensors are down. The whole array.>   Kydell gripped the nearest console, his claws digging into the metal. "Let me guess. It happened last week?"   <Yes, Sir. I've ordered the parts, but they haven't arrived yet.>   "Why am I always surrounded by incompetence!"   <I can't presume to answer that, Sir. Is there something else I can help you with?>
