Dragonflies
Sam sat watching two dragonflies flying across the moonlight river. Listening to its steady wings flapping and the gentle moving river, feeling content with life, he knew why. It was time to start his adventure, and he had finally saved enough money to buy what he needed.
His strong desire to explore the world had finally started to happen, and he was not going to let anything stop him. The dragonflies landed on a branch close to his hand and then swam down, gently tapping the water with their feet.
Sam looked back as he heard movement behind him smiling, he already knew who it was, and his heart began to beat faster.
Lucy ran up to him, and the small dragonflies flew away as he stood to meet her. He was so happy to see her. She was holding the note he had left in the book he had given her earlier that day. It read, "meet me in our tree tonight urgent; I'll bring the drinks". She gave it to him and said, "What is it that's urgent."
Sam smiled. "I thought you might want to hang out before I leave tomorrow tonight."
"You're leaving tomorrow; what is this about?"
Sam nodded and put his arm around her, "I'm going to do our dream. I'm going to become an adventurer...I've got enough for the both of us; come with me."
Lucy stared into his eyes and knew he was serious. Then she closed her eyes tightly and took a deep breath before moving away from him, only to sit down on the river bank. She didn't look back at him. "I still need to finish my training. My grandparents will be furious if I don't; besides, we don't know anything about living outside our homes."
Sam sat down next to her his smile weakened a little "I know but isn't that what adventurous like seeing and doing things you've never done before."
Lucy said nothing, looking down, staring into the river, contemplating everything that had just happened in the few hours since he had given her the note.
Lucy snuggled her head into her arms, looking tired. Sam watched the stars and did nothing.
Lucy finally said, "you serious, aren't you... couldn't we just wait one more year after that? I should be ready training done, and I'll read up more about the world, plus I'll make sure you're not paying for everything."
"I don't mind that as long as you are with me, and besides, we will look for jobs on the way. I was thinking of becoming Venandi be their medic."
Lucy looked over at him with a big smile "really... that's what you want? I thought you wanted to travel."
"I did...but I want you with me too; I'm not going to travel alone. It would be too dangerous."
Lucy grinned "and you becoming a medic isn't"
"Sorry? We have seen medics; some seem fine, some even untouched."
"No, I mean you becoming a medic is dangerous. I've known you for years. You're the guy who jumps in the fire to rescue anyone, even if you know you're going to get burned. If you are not careful, you could die"
Sam squeezed her hand gently, "I promise Lucy, that will never happen."
"you don't have to promise me. I know you can keep that promise."
They sat for a while in silence, each looking out over the river and watching the floating orbs of light as they moved slowly across the water.
Sam looked at Lucy before looking up at the sky as an insect landed on her finger. "I overheard my father two days ago, they said once you finish your training, your grandparents will retire, and your village will need a new pair of healers."
"Is that why you really decided to become leave?"
Sam took a deep breath before looking at Lucy. "Yeah, we both know who will replace them, don't you."
"of cause I do, Sam. Do you think leaving will stop them?"
"it might; they need two healers in each village. If I'm not here, they might hold that back till I come back."
"what if they just pair me with someone else? Or you never come back?"
"I will. Lucy, I want you there with me. It is both our dream. I'll message you back then as soon as you finish your training. Tell me, and I'll come back home just to get you out, and we can go."
"just like that", she smiled sadly.
"I'll take you there myself to Einheit; that's a promise."
Lucy turned, took hold of Sam's face and stared into his eyes with the same seriousness that was there before. Sam's eyes widen as he felt Lucy's lips kiss his "Don't do something dumb and die out there."
"I won't. I promise"
